Check out The Namesake, directed by Mira Nair and starring Kal Penn. The film begins in 1977 as Ashima, a young Bengali woman, accepts Ashoke Ganguli's marriage proposal. They move from India to New York and start a family. Their son, named Gogol after the Russian author, and daughter Sonia grow up in America. Ashima has trouble adapting to her new home and the food, cold weather and language. Ashoke has a much easier time adapting.
Gogol grows up as a typical American teenager and, inspired by a family visit to the Taj Mahal, decideds to become an architect. We watch him as he struggles with being Indian and being American. Sonia also struggles with her culture and her identity.
You need to watch this touching film about country and culture, love and langauge, young and old.
