BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - - UVa-Wise has been picked to finish second in the Mountain East Conference Preseason Women's Lacrosse Poll released by the league office Friday. Defending champion was tabbed as the preseason favorite in a vote that was conducted by the conference's coaches.
WISE - - Behind redshirt senior forward Taiwo Badmus' season-high 38 points, the Cavaliers defeated Fairmont State University, 90-82, on Thursday night. UVa-Wise (10-13, 8-9 MEC) outrebounded the Fighting Falcons 49-32 and shot 47.8 percent (33-for-69) from the field to earn the upset win.
WISE - - Fairmont State never trailed Thursday as the Fighting Falcons claimed a 61-50 Mountain East Conference women's basketball victory over UVa-Wise at the Prior Center. With the win, Fairmont State posted a season-series sweep of the Cavaliers.

WISE - - The threat of inclement weather has once again wreaked havoc on the early season baseball schedule for UVa-Wise. The Cavaliers' three-game series at Carson-Newman this weekend has now been shortened to a doubleheader Friday beginning at 12 p.m. Game one of the doubleheader will be a nine inning contest with the finale scheduled for seven innings. The two schools will not play Saturday as originally scheduled.
WISE - - Head Football Coach Dane Damron and his staff announced the addition of 26 student-athletes to the football roster at UVa-Wise on National Signing Day 2018. The number is the largest in the history of the program which is entering its fourth year as a full NCAA Division II member.

UVa-Wise (9-13, 7-9 MEC) shot a solid 56.7 percent (17-for-30) from the field in the second half to complete the comeback against the Cardinals, with all five starters scoring in double-figures. Sophomore point guard Michal Seals finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Redshirt senior forward Taiwo Badmus edged a double-double, posting 16 points and eight rebounds.
About UVa-Wise Fresh off a season-series sweep of Wheeling Jesuit and its first road win of the season, UVa-Wise will look to keep its tournament hopes alive Thursday when the team kicks off a four-game home stand. Currently, the Cavaliers sit three games back of the final tournament berth with six games to play. In the win over the Cardinals, sophomore Cynita Webb scored the game-winning basket at the buzzer as she tallied 15 points and 13 rebounds to record her eighth double-double of the year. Freshman Nokomis Williams made her first collegiate start in the win and poured in a season-high nine points on 4-of-5 shooting. Redshirt freshman Kalee Johnson also had a solid performance as she matched her season-high with 13 points. UVa-Wise has seen improvement in its turnover number recently. The Cavs had their lowest turnover output of the season last Thursday at West Liberty (7) before turning it over just 16 times at Wheeling Jesuit. UVa-Wise is averaging 21.1 turnovers per game.

In fact, the game had not been played at a competitive level within 150 miles of the Southwest Virginia campus in the state. Despite these facts, Marshall, an Atlanta native, pledged her commitment to the College and its newly named coach Meghan Dennehy.
WISE - - The UVa-Wise Softball double header scheduled for tomorrow, Feb. 6, against St. Augustine's University has been cancelled. The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 27 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Cavalier Field.

CARY, N.C. - - UVa-Wise and St. Augustine's wrapped up their three game series Saturday as the two schools split a doubleheader. Sophomore Greg Duncan earned the mound win for the Cavaliers in the opener as he tossed three innings of shutout ball out of the bullpen to aid his club to a 7-2 triumph. In the series finale, the Falcons used a four-run third inning to post a 6-2 win en route to winning the series two-games-to-one.

Sophomore guard Chance Sheffey put the Cavaliers ahead with a shot from downtown with nine seconds on the clock, putting the Cavaliers (9-13, 7-9 MEC) up by one point, 79-78, over the Cardinals.A costly foul by Wheeling put sophomore point guard Michal Seals at the line with three seconds left in regulation. Seals knocked down both shots to seal the 81-78 win over the Cardinals (17-5, 12-4 MEC).

The sophomore forward finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Cavaliers claimed a season-series sweep of the Cardinals.
UVa-Wise suffered a 102-67 loss to No. 4 West Liberty on the road Thursday night. The Cavaliers (8-13, 6-9 MEC) were within reach for the early part of the first half before careless mistakes and turnovers allowed the game to slip away. UVa-Wise was also slowed down by lights out shooting by the Hilltoppers who hit 60 percent from the field and made 18 3-pointers on the night. The Cavaliers improved first half field goal percentage to 46.7 percent, only hitting four shots from beyond the arc in the game.

Despite protecting the basketball, Elise Clyburn's team was unable to overcome a 56-37 deficit on the boards. West Liberty limited UVa-Wise to seven offensive rebounds, including just two in the first half. Following the game, the Cavs will return home to face Fairmont State and Shepherd University next week.
