Off Campus Access

Off Campus Access for Library Users

OVERVIEW OF SERVICES

Most online resources can now be accessed from off campus, although many of them, such as VIVA, are available only to registered students, faculty, and staff of the college.

Unrestriced resources include WebCat, the Library's catalog, and many other resources available from the library's home page.

In order to access restricted resources, such as InforTrac, FirstSearch and other VIVA Resources, you must first establish an account with the University's proxy server computer.

As you research, you may discover you need books or articles that our Library does not hold; you may request these items online using the Interlibrary Loan Services (ILL). Please remember that in most cases you will have to pick up the material at the Wyllie Library at UVA-Wise; articles may be available electronically, but books must still be picked up at the Library.

ABINGDON STUDENTS

If you are registered for classes held at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, the Library at Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) is your library, too. The VHCC Library will process Interlibrary Loan requests and help you with your research; and, of course, you may check out material from the Library's collection. For more information on their services, visit the VHCC Library.

General Information

Because of our relationship with the University of Virginia, the John Cook Wyllie Library is able to provide off-campus access to VIVA & other electronic resources through the use of U.Va's proxy server. (Click HERE to learn more about a proxy server.) All University of Virginia's College at Wise students, faculty, and staff will now be able to access these resources from home through their own Internet service provider (ISP).

Direct access to databases and electronic resources will continue to be available to campus Residence Halls, Faculty and Staff offices via the campus network.

As you research, you may discover you need books or articles that our Library does not hold; you may request these items online from Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Please remember that in most cases you will have to pick up the material at the Wyllie Library in Wise; articles may be available electronically, but books must still be picked up at the Library.

If you need help using any of these resources, call us or come to the library.
