Off Campus Access for Faculty
Step 1: Account Set-up
Step 2: Browser Configuration
Step 3: Using Your Proxy Server Account
Because of our relationship with the University of Virginia, the John Cook Wyllie Library is able to provide off-campus access to other electronic resources through the use of U.Va's proxy server. (Click HERE to learn more about a proxy server.) All University of Virginia's College at Wise faculty and staff will now be able to access resources that our proxy service does not provide from home through their own Internet service provider (ISP).
As you research, you may discover you need books or articles that our Library does not hold; you may request these items online from Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Please remember that in most cases you will have to pick up the material at the Wyllie Library in Wise; articles may be available electronically, but books must still be picked up at the Library.
If you need help using any of these resources, call us or come to the library.
- Step 1: Set-up your U.Va proxy server account. The account setup screen will ask you for your last name, your student ID number (without any hyphens), and a password of your creation. It's that simple!
To access the Proxy Server Account Setup page click HERE.
After you successfully setup your proxy server account be sure to note your User ID and password. Remember you'll need both to access the VIVA databases and electronic resources from off-campus.
- Step 2: Configure your web browser to use the proxy server.
Select proxy server configuration instructions from the following list of browsers and platforms.
|Firefox 1.x/2.x||Recommended browser|
|Netscape 8||Works, see Firefox for configuration instructions|
|Internet Explorer 5 or higher||Some sites may not proxy properly (library resources are OK)|

- Step 3: Restart your browser. Test your proxy connection
Now you're ready to start your research!
Once you've established your proxy server account and configured your browser, you will be able to access U.Va electronic resources from off campus. Before you access any of the resources, you will be prompted to type in your User ID and the password you specified on the account creation form. You will be prompted for this information at the beginning of each session.
If you need additional help, contact the Library at firstname.lastname@example.org or 276-328-0150.
